01 — The Founder

From borrowed
pistols to building
a range

Zakir Khan grew up in a middle-class family in Shahjahanpur, Meerut, the son of a generator mechanic. His love for the sport began at his grandmother's home in Johri village, Baghpat — the village that has given India some of its finest shooters.

He did not own a pistol until 2006. He competed at the World Shooting Championships in Zagreb with a borrowed weapon — and returned with a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol team event. Over the next four years he added Commonwealth gold, Asian Championship bronze, and a Hungarian Open title to his name.

"I wanted to share my experience with the future of our country — with proper guidance from the very beginning."— Zakir Khan, on why he built the academy

Today he runs Champion Shooting Academy in Delhi with international-grade weapons, official target cards, and competition-standard pellets — the infrastructure he never had access to as a young athlete. In 2026 he was selected as a coach for the Indian Shooting Team at the Junior World Championship in Suhl, Germany, and his students now medal regularly at state, national and international championships.

Biography sourced from Zakir Khan's interview with Sportsmatik, July 2018.

Olympic Disciplines
We Train

Shooting is contested across precision and rapid-fire events at distances of 10, 25 and 50 metres. Each demands a different balance of stillness, timing and nerve. Select an event below.

10METRES · INDOOR

Air Pistol

The flagship Olympic pistol event and the academy's core discipline — Zakir Khan's own speciality. Fired one-handed, standing, at a target whose 10-ring is smaller than the pellet itself. Success is decided almost entirely by trigger control and the ability to hold absolute stillness in the final second before release.

10METRES · INDOOR

Air Rifle

Fired standing with a supported rifle at a 10-ring just half a millimetre across. Where pistol rewards trigger discipline, rifle rewards total body control — heartbeat, breath and micro-balance all register on the target. The most accessible entry point for younger athletes and the discipline that has produced most of India's recent Olympic medallists.

Pistol — Rapid Fire & Sport

The pressure event. Targets turn to face the shooter for a fixed window — as little as four seconds for five shots in Rapid Fire — and the athlete must draw, acquire and release under a clock. This is where mental conditioning stops being an advantage and becomes the whole game.

Free Pistol

The purest test in pistol shooting and the discipline in which Zakir Khan won Asian Championship bronze in Kuwait. Sixty shots, one hand, no time pressure — only the shooter, the wind, and a 50-metre distance that magnifies every millimetre of error at the muzzle.

Rifle — Three Positions

The most physically demanding event on the programme. Forty shots each from kneeling, prone and standing, with equipment and position changes under time. It rewards athletes who have built genuine strength and flexibility alongside their marksmanship — which is why conditioning is part of training here, not an afterthought.
